Hundreds of heroes will be honored in Gaithersburg over Memorial Day weekend when the city and the Montgomery Village Rotary Club partnered to host their first “Flags for Our Heroes” program.

More than 500 full-sized American flags were displayed Friday through Monday at Bohrer Park at Summit Hall Farm to pay tribute to past and present heroes, including members of the military, police force and fire service, as well as teachers, coaches, mentors and community leaders.

An opening ceremony is scheduled to be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, featuring remarks from Mayor Sidney Katz, Montgomery Village Rotary Club President Dale Howard and others.

The flags were mostly sponsored by individuals who gave a $50 donation per flag to the Montgomery Village Rotary Club Foundation. Some of the remaining flags were dedicated to heroic organizations, like Operation Second Chance.
