The body discovered in a pond near Lakeforest mall Tuesday belonged to a 22-year-old Germantown man reported missing by family days earlier, according to Montgomery County police.

Maurice Darnell Munford Jr.’s body was pulled from a pond used to capture runoff from a mall parking lot at the busy intersection of Russell and Montgomery Village avenues in Gaithersburg.

Family members helped police identify the body.

Montgomery County police Cpl. Rebecca Innocenti couldn’t comment on specifics but said his family reported him missing Saturday out of concern for his “emotional well-being.”

Innocenti said it’s still unclear how he ended up in the pond and what may have caused his death. Munford was last seen near Lakeforest mall at around 2 p.m. Friday. His body was reported to police about 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Findings from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner have not yet been released.
