A police officer responding to a domestic violence call in Gaithersburg Tuesday night struck a man with his patrol car, police said.

The man who was hit — Otto Reed, 61, of the unit block of Water Street in Gaithersburg — was in critical condition, Montgomery County police spokeswoman Janelle Smith said Wednesday.

Reed was hit on Chestnut Street, near East Diamond Avenue.

Police received the call at around 11 p.m., police said in a news release.

Police said the driver, Officer Drew Soldano, was answering a domestic violence call. He immediately stopped, made notifications over the radio and provided aid.

Other Montgomery County and Gaithersburg police officers, as well as Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Service, responded to the scene, Montgomery County police said in a news release.

As part of protocol, Soldano was placed on paid administrative leave.

Soldano has been a Montgomery County police officer for seven years and is assigned to the Sixth District, which covers Gaithersburg, police said.
