A Kentland volunteer firefighter was killed Thursday after his motorcycle crashed into a sedan in Kettering, Fire/EMS officials said.

Garrett Greene, 24, of Mitchellville was killed when his motorcycle T-boned a sedan at about 2 p.m. on Central Avenue at Staton Drive, said Mark Brady, Prince George’s County Fire/EMS spokesman. Brady said both vehicles flipped, with the sedan landing on top of Greene.

He was pronounced dead at the scene and the sedan’s driver was transported to the hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries, Brady said.

Greene also was a career fire fighter with Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services, Brady said.

Tony Kelleher, Kentland Volunteer Fire Department chief, said the Landover-based unit was saddened at the loss of the fire fighter and they planned to attend his services, which haven’t been announced yet. Greene served in Kentland’s company 46 near Prince George’s County Community College in Largo.

“He was just really, always a happy person,” Kelleher said. “He had an aspiration to be a fire fighter and it came true.”

Brady said as the weather warms the Fire/EMS department responds to more accidents involving motorcycles. These incidents often come with more serious injuries as motorcycles leave the driver exposed, even though they wear a helmet, Brady said.

He urged drivers and motorcycle riders to be aware of their surroundings and to respect each other’s place on the road.

“We need to share the road together,” Brady said.
