The post office in White Flint Mall is set to close April 24, with a replacement location to open in July.
The Postal Service is planning to open a replacement at 5056-B Nicholson Lane, in the Nicholson Plaza shopping center, but that site is not yet ready for to move in, according to Richard Hancock, a Postal Service real estate specialist.
The post office boxes at the mall offices will be relocated to the Kensington Post Office at 10325 Kensington Parkway, until the new post office opens, according to a notice.
The Postal Service’s lease is up April 26. Agency representatives previously said the Postal Service had a lease on the mall site through the end of May, but Hancock said Friday that was an error.
Hancock said the agency will need some time to move equipment out of the old location after it closes.
“You have to depostalize; you can’t stay there until the end of the lease,” he said.
The mall’s owner, Lerner Enterprises, is planning to tear almost all of it down and build a large, mixed-use development.
The closing date is later than one previously set by the Postal Service. A notice of the closure at the post office Thursday said the office would close at the end of business on Friday, April 12, which someone working at the post office confirmed meant Friday, April 11. The advocacy group Friends of White Flint posted a picture of the notice on its blog Wednesday.
Laura Dvorak, a Postal Service communications programs specialist, said in an email Friday that the post office would close April 24, at the close of business, and new signs would be posted.
