A Capitol Heights organization is hosting a shelter makeover in Washington, D.C., to remodel the rooms of shelter users.

Shanae Newman, My Girlfriend’s House program coordinator, said the makeover is held annually and Saturday’s makeover will take place at Rachael’s Women’s Center, 1222 11th St., N.W.

Volunteers spruce up the rooms by cleaning and hanging flowers on the walls.

“We help the shelter feel more like home,” Newman said.

My Girlfriend’s House uses youth mentees and volunteers to complete the project, separating groups into teams that tackle each room, Newman said.

Anyone interested in volunteering with My Girlfriend’s House, who also work within Prince George’s County, can fill out a volunteer application at www.mygirlfriendshouse.org.
