While most of the Prince George’s County High School baseball teams were unable to play their season openers last weekend, several of the private school teams maintained their busy start to the campaign.

DeMatha Catholic High School is off to a 3-0 start following victories against Mount Vernon, H.D. Woodson and St. Mary’s Ryken, but the Stags should get their first serious test of the spring when they are scheduled to travel to Our Lady of Good Counsel. DeMatha, led by seniors Justin Morris and Ben Prada, is scheduled to face county foe Riverdale Baptist on April 25. Morris is expected to attend the University of Maryland, College Park this fall.

The Crusaders are off to a 6-1 start and longtime coach Terry Terrill is only 10 wins shy of reaching the 1,000-win plateau.

Only four county public school games were played on Friday.

In a meeting of two perennial league powers, Bowie (1-0) rallied from an early, 4-2 deficit to defeat visiting Gwynn Park 9-4. Bulldogs’ reliever Sage Davis pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings to get the victory.

In the other three games that were played, the county 4A League teams gained the upper hand on their 3A/2A/1A League opponents. Northwestern (1-0) defeated Forestville Military Academy 19-6, Suitland defeated Crossland 14-1 and Laurel dominated Potomac 20-2.
