A gas leak that triggered the evacuation of an apartment building in White Oak on Tuesday was caused by a fallen, ice-filled gutter.

At around 12:15 p.m., emergency crews responded to the 11600 block of Lockwood Drive for reports of a gas odor, according to Beth Anne Nesselt, a Montgomery County Fire & Rescue spokeswoman.

As a result of the leak, residents were asked to leave an apartment building in the 11600 block of Lockwood Drive, Nesselt said.

Lockwood Drive, between new Hampshire Avenue and July Drive, was temporarily shut down, according to police.

Washington Gas remained on site to make repairs.

Ruben Rodriguez, a spokesman for Washington Gas, said an iced-over gutter fell on a gas meter attached to a building at 1598 Lockwood Drive, causing a break in the line. The gas was shut off at 12:45 p.m., affecting service at the address.

Rodriguez said there were no reports of injuries and the area is now safe.
