A girl was seriously hurt in a sledding accident at Takoma Park Middle School on Tuesday.

Rescuers were sent to the school at 7611 Piney Branch Road at around 1:45 p.m., where they found a child at the bottom of a hill.

The child suffered serious injuries, but the injures were not considered life-threatening, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman Beth Anne Nesselt said.

The girl, who is 12 or 13 years old, was taken to a local specialty care center for treatment, Nesselt said.

In light of the incident, fire officials are urging sledders to take extra precautions, like avoiding steep hills and making sure there is a long, flat area at the bottom to coast to a stop.

Nesselt also said icy slopes and hills that end near paved areas with obstacles should be avoided.
