The Berwyn Heights Historical Committee will host a historical presentation and wine and cheese reception on Sunday.

Historian Doug McElrath of Riverdale Park will give a presentation on the War of 1812, titled “The War of 1812 in Berwyn Heights – I Didn’t Know That!”

The presentation will examine the Battle of Bladensburg and the work of the Bladensburg History Project, a community history initiative.

“Prince George’s County and Maryland have been commemorating the War of 1812, so we’ve been doing the same in Berwyn Heights,” said Sharmila Bhatia, chair of the historical committee. “It was a major event in U.S. history.”

McElrath, a curator at the University of Maryland Libraries, is the research director for the Bladensburg History Project and chair of historic preservation group Prince George’s Heritage, Inc.

His presentation will last around 30 minutes with time for questions, Bhatia said. She encourages residents from Berwyn Heights and the surrounding area to attend.

“Besides learning about the history of our local area, it will be a good opportunity to meet members of our community,” she said.

The free event will take place at 2 p.m. at Berwyn Heights Town Center, located at 5700 Berwyn Road.
