A Kensington man has died after suffering severe burns in a fire that started in his kitchen.

Thomas Dolan Geoghegan, 70, of the 3900 Block of Decatur Avenue died in an area hospital after the Wednesday fire.

Firefighters responded to the blaze at 4:30 a.m., according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokesman Scott Graham.

Graham said the man was transported in critical condition to an area hospital, where he later died.

Fire investigators have ruled the fire accidental and the State Medical Examiner’s Office is determining the official cause of Geoghegan’s death. Other residents of the home were able to escape the fire after hearing the smoke alarms, according to a press release from Graham.

Damage to the home was estimated at $300.

“There was very little damage to the structure,” Graham said.
