The Damascus High School wrestling team asserted itself in a home tri-meet on Saturday, defeating Northwest, 46-18, and Winston Churchill, 49-18, in dominating fashion.
The Swarmin’ Hornets (6-0) had several strong performances, but none more impressive than David Creegan, who defeated one of Northwest’s top wrestlers, Nick Davis, in a hard-fought 7-4 decision at 126 pounds.
“That was unbelievable,” Damascus coach John Ferguson said. “Going in we were just like, ‘Don’t get pinned,’ that’s all we asked of him. His record is 13 and 1, and he’s really a 113 pounder — probably one of the better 113 pounders in the state, but we have Mikey Macklin in front of him. He has had a couple big matches, but that one was huge.”
Creegan himself was just as surprised with his performance against the reigning Montgomery County champion at 113 pounds.
“I knew how good he is, so of course I was nervous heading into the match,” he said. “He got that first takedown and I was like, ‘Dang!’ and I just held out through all of the [arm] bars — he had me in bars throughout the whole thing — and then he got a little high and I just took advantage of it and flipped him over. I wasn’t expecting to do that good against him.”
Creegan also pointed to Davis’s 2012 4A/3A West Region tournament defeat of his older brother, Kenny Creegan, which propelled Davis into the state tournament.
“It meant a lot to beat Nick, because my brother, two years ago, was beat out for states by him,” Creegan said. “So now I have to tell Kenny all about how I beat Nick.”
Other notable performers for the Swarmin’ Hornets include Cory Obendorfer, who recorded a pair of pins in the 138-pound weight class, while younger brother Scott Obendorfer recorded a pin as well as an impressive 6-0 decision over Northwest’s Dell Ngonga at 106 pounds. Ari Cacopardo submitted a pin and a decision at 182, and Branden Parent turned in a pair of major decisions — one at 120 pounds and one at 126.
Junior Mikey Macklin, the 4A/3A state champion at 106 pounds last season, secured his 100th career victory for Damascus with a pin of Churchill’s Mitch Bloch in 1 minute, 24 seconds.
“We take away the excitement that we were able to compete at a high level,” Furgeson said. “We want those kind of matches. Those guys are helping us to get better. By wrestling competition like that, that helps get better for the state level.”
Meanwhile, the Bulldogs (4-2) eked out a 32-30 victory over the Jaguars (3-2) in the middle match of the day. Hunter Sutton (152), Adama Kieta (170) and Danny Welch (138) each supplied pins for Churchill in the contest.
“Danny Welch came up with a huge pin toward the end of that Northwest match, and we couldn’t ask for any more from him,” Bulldogs coach Tim Lowe said. “It’s the first time he has been in the varsity lineup for us this year, and he came through big; I’m proud of him.”
Churchill freshman Tristan Linares also impressed with a 13-5 major decision against Brandon Barnhard of Damascus at 132 pounds, and a nail-biting 5-4 loss to Davis at 126 pounds.
“Today we came out and fired on all cylinders, and this keeps us in the region dual hunt,” Lowe said. “ If we can to continue to improve, and get some wins here later in the year, we are going to be right there at the end of the year.”
