Prince George’s County police are investigating an officer-involved shooting after Bowie police shot a man who allegedly attempted to drive a stolen Dodge truck at them.

Bowie police were following up on a stolen car investigation in the 12400 block of Keynote Lane on Dec. 27 when a suspect in that investigation fled, leading officers on a foot chase to the 2600 block to Kennison Lane, according to a Bowie police report.

The man stole a Dodge truck from a resident’s driveway on Kennison Lane and attempted to hit the officers with the vehicle, Bowie Police Chief John Nesky said.

The officers fired at and hit the suspect at least once in the upper body, Nesky said.

“They had to discharge their weapons in order to protect themselves,” Nesky said. “They were on foot and he was trying to strike them with the vehicle.”

The man, who has not yet been identified, was transported to Prince George’s County Hospital and was listed in stable condition, according to the report.

County police spokeswoman Nicole Hubbard said there were no updates as of Monday.

This is the second officer involved shooting in Bowie since the police department started in 2007, Nesky said.

“It is something no officer wants to do,” he said.
