Tuesday evening was a rough one in Washington, D.C. for a pair of Prince George’s County high school wrestling teams.
Parkdale High School and Eleanor Roosevelt both suffered losses to St. John’s College High School in a double dual meet. For the Panthers, the loss was their first of the year, while the Raiders dropped to 2-2 with the defeat.
Parkdale (4-1), however, under the direction of Adam Forschner fared better than the Raiders as they were competitive in many of the matches they wrestled in a 43-22 loss. Roosevelt, on the other hand, received only three wins on the night in a humbling 63-17 defeat.
“I didn’t expect us to win, but I didn’t expect us to lose some of the matches that we lost,” Forschner said. “We’ll be alright, though. St. John’s is a very tough team this year.”
Parkdale would have been closer had it not dropped points in a pair a difficult matches, one that reached the ultimate tie breaker. In the opening match of the evening, Parkdale senior LK Lyles-El and Brian Hennssey managed nothing but escapes for the duration as Hennssey outlasted Lyles-El, 3-2. Lyles-El had a chance in the second overtime to ride for the win, but couldn’t hold on. In the other close match, the Panthers’ Ray Jones allowed only one second-period escape in losing to a tough wrestler in Cadets’ 170-pounder Josh Simon, 1-0.
“There were some good things, but I think some people got scared and there were some other matches we could have won,” Forschner said.
Not all of the overtime matches were bad for Parkdale, however. Panthers’ heavyweight Juan Herrera took his opponent to an ultimate tiebreaker and came out victorious, 4-3, on the strength of an escape. At 220, Macred Gbenro also worked overtime as he used a dramatic reversal in the opening overtime period to secure a 3-1 win.
Perhaps the most impressive performances by the Panthers (4-1) came from still-undefeated freshman Isiah Williams (120) and senior Kevin Thomas (145), both of whom pinned their opponents. Michael Perdomo (138) also delivered a strong effort by beating Eric O’Brien, 11-2.
“We’ve got a tough tournament at LaPlata coming up this weekend, so hopefully we’ll be able to get it together,” Forschner said.
Roosevelt, meanwhile, is still trying to find its footing a bit this season, but did receive a handful of impressive showings in the loss.
Namely, Raiders 220-pounder Casey Wokocha, who was wrestling his first match of the season after acclimating to the winter season following football, dispatched Thomas McNamara in 1 minute, 55 seconds. Wokocha appears just as strong and skillful, if not more so, than last year and expectations are high.
“He missed out on a lot of possible seeding points already, but when it comes down to it, if he’s as good as he’s supposed to be, he should win anyway,” Raiders coach Mike McRae said. “His stance is so wide and strong and so athletic, he’s going to be really tough to take down this year.”
Also turning in strong performances for the Raiders were 120-pounder Jon Inda, who pinned Edwin Reyes midway through the third period and 126-pounder Samir Salih who recorded a technical fall against Adrian Nelson, 17-1.
Raj Nair (1:52) was leading his match against Kyle Smith, 7-5, to start the third period but was unable to hold onto the lead and succumbed to a pin at the five-minute mark.
“We just have a lot of new guys this year,” McRae said. “They’re doing well in the practice room, but when it comes to the matches we’ve had so far, they’re progressing, just not at lightning speed.”
