The Bowie Police Department participated in the annual Shop with a Cop event, where young residents in need were given an opportunity to select Christmas gifts.
Sgt. Bennie Henderson, Bowie police spokesman, said 29 children participated in the event, which was about the same number as last year. Each child had a $100 limit to select toys, and most of them picked up things for family members along with gifts for themselves, Henderson said. It went well and it was touching, he said.
“There was one child who didn’t get anything for himself,” Henderson said. “We had to tell him to get something for himself too.”
The Shop with a Cop event is held each year to help children in need get something for Christmas and also expose children to police officers in a positive light, Henderson said. It helps them associate the officers are agents for good, not just the people that are called when bad things happen, he said.
