The station commander of the McLean District police station will be leaving the Fairfax County Police Department in January to become Vienna’s new deputy chief of police.

On Monday, Vienna Chief of Police Jim Morris announced the appointment of Capt. Daniel Janickey as Vienna’s new deputy chief of police. Janickey will succeed Vienna Police Capt. Mike Miller, who retired on Oct. 1 after serving 29 years with the Vienna Police Department.

Morris said Janickey was selected from among 103 candidates and will assume his official duties with the Town of Vienna on Jan. 21, 2014.

Janickey began with the Fairfax County Police Department in 1989 as a police officer and has held several positions during his career with the department, most recently serving as Commander of the McLean District station.

In a presentation before the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors in February, Janickey asked for 33 new positions for Tysons . He said based on anecdotal research conducted with mall property managers, hotel, restaurant and transportation leaders, as well as the Metro Transit police, he expects a significant increase in assaults, robberies, thefts, destruction of property and stolen vehicles once Metro opens. The board eventually approved nine of the 33 requested officers.

“As commander of the McLean District Station, Captain Janickey did lots of groundwork on the expansion of the Tysons Corner area,” said 2nd Lt. Charles Riddle, who recently was chosen to head the new Tysons Urban Team police unit, the first of its kind in the county. “He has great vision and always works and plans toward the future. He will truly be missed by the FCPD but will prove to be a great addition to the Vienna Police Department.”

Janickey has held several leadership roles within the county’s police department including positions in hostage negotiations, special operations, incident support services and peer support, and internal affairs. Janickey was also assistant commander of the Franconia District station and has previously worked out of Sully District and the Mason District stations.
