Karen Augusta Thurber, 44, of Derwood, died December 1, 2013 at Suburban Hospital, Bethesda, MD.
Karen was born March 13, 1969 to W. Robert Thurber and Carolyn Bowen Thurber at Holy Cross Hospital, Silver Spring, MD. She was a graduate of Magruder High School, Rockville, MD, and of Goucher College, Towson, MD, with a double major of English and Spanish and later received a BS in mathematics at the University of MD, College Park.
Karen was an enthusiastic Girl Scout, a member of a troop from age 7 through college. She earned the Gold Award, the highest achievement in Girl Scouting. She was also a Girl Scout leader for several years.
She had a wonderful sense of humor. She enjoyed solving and writing word puzzles, especially cryptic crosswords, and had several puzzles published in Games magazine. Recently, she used her artistic and creative talents to sew and make accessories for American Girl mini dolls.
Karen loved the outdoors, the parkland and the trees that she had watched grow her entire life. On vacations, along with the rest of her family, she kept a journal of visits to parks and historic sites.
She is survived by her parents, and brother, Kent R. Thurber, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Family will receive friends from 2-4 & 6-8 pm on Wed. Dec. 4 at DeVol Funeral Home, 10 E. Deer Park Dr., Gaithersburg, MD 20877. A funeral service will be held at 10 am on Thurs. Dec. 5 at Mill Creek Parish United Methodist Church, 7101 Horizon Terrace, Derwood, MD 20855. Interment following the service will be at Parklawn Memorial Park. Memorial contributions can be made to the Arbor Day Foundation, www.arborday.org, or to Mill Creek Parish UMC.
