A day after 25-year-old Michael Kirby Alvarado died in a shooting on a sidewalk in Gaithersburg, police arrested the Silver Spring man they say pulled the trigger.
Police say they obtained an arrest warrant charging Jefferson Daniel Delgado, 20, of Quebec Terrace, with first-degree murder on Friday.
According to police, the two men knew each other, but investigators are not sure how.
Alvarado’s slaying sent investigators combing the area around North Summit Ave, in search of suspects. Initially, police were looking for two men — one dressed in all black, and one dressed in a black and white striped shirt. The shooting and manhunt had four local schools in a “shelter in place” or lockdown status Thursday.
Police arrested Delgado at around 8 p.m. Friday in Silver Spring when they stopped a car he was in, according to a statement they released announcing his arrest. Delgado tried to flee after they stopped the car.
Delgado is currently being held without bail, online court records show. A lawyer for Delgado was not listed.
Alvarado was a Gaithersburg High School football stand-out who earned a full scholarship to the College of William and Mary in Virginia, according to his former coach Kreg Kephart.
