Check with NBC 4 consumer reporter Liz Crenshaw — her answer is right on Target.

Question: I went shopping at Target the other day and the cashier wanted to scan my ID at the register. Why does Target scan your ID, and what does it do with your personal information?

Answer: We turned directly to Target for this answer. It tells us that it scans customers’ IDs for any product that needs age verification-that includes alcohol., certain medications, and some video games. It says it scans the ID so that the system can verify that the license is valid-that means the customer is of age, and the ID is not expired. And after the guest leaves, only his or her date of birth is retained in the system.
