On Saturday, in Prince George’s County, Broderick Rice, the “King of Gospel Comedy,” will bring his brand of “sanctified humor” to the Publick Playhouse, 5445 Landover Road, Landover. The son of a Baptist preacher playfully pokes fun at church folk, without pushing the envelope. The opening act will be Maryland’s own mother-of-four-turned-comedienne Nikkie Johnson. Further funny business can be found in Fairfax County, Va., when the Austin Lounge Lizards, a band blending humor with country and bluegrass, shares some of its “Home and Deranged” satire with audiences at the Barns at Wolf Trap on Saturday. In Montgomery County, Jerome Kern’s “Show Boat” sets sail for the Bethesda Blues and Jazz Supper Club at 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Presented by Young Artists of America — founded by operatic tenor Rolando Sanz and Maryland Classic Youth Orchestras director Kristofer Sanz — the production culls a cast of 41 high-school-aged singers from throughout Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Virginia, to join an orchestra 40 members strong for show tune such as “Ol’ Man River” and “You Are Love.” The performance will be preceded by a gala cocktail hour and raffle at 5 p.m., followed by a seated three-course dinner at 6 p.m. Doors open for show-only guests at 7 p.m. Tickets for the gala are $125. Also on Sunday, the mother and son team of longtime Sandy Spring residents Susan Avis Murphy and Paul Colombini will offer a gallery talk and live demonstration of watercolor painting from 2-5 p.m. at the Sandy Spring Museum, 17901 Bentley Road, Sandy Spring.
