Eric Mendoza, the only challenger for a Ward 4 seat on the Takoma Park City Council, dropped out of the race Thursday, according to City Clerk Jessie Carpenter.
The notice was posted on the city’s Facebook page Thursday afternoon. Mendoza was reached Friday afternoon. He said he had announced that he was dropping out on Wednesday and declined to comment further.
That means there are uncontested races for the council seats in all six wards and mayor’s office.
Mendoza was running for Ward 4 council representative against incumbent Terry Seamens. Mendoza’s name will still appear on the ballot and there is no official stipulation in the city’s charter or code for withdrawing from a race at this point in the process, according to Carpenter. The official period for dropping out is in the three days following nominations for the election in early October.
The election takes place on Tuesday.
