The Rev. Laverne A. Wilson of Silver Spring will celebrate 25 years of ministry Nov.15 at the Sheraton Town Center Hotel in Columbia.
Wilson is owner of Tomorrow’s Future, a Christian child and family care service, and senior pastor of Charis Worship Center in Burtonsville.
Wilson was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., to a single mother and was influenced by her grandmother, who she said was “instrumental in holding up the banner of faith and serving others.”
Her career began in 2001 at People’s Community Baptist Church in Silver Spring; she joined Charis in 2006.
“I got involved in ministry when I saw the disparity of training and acceptance of women within the body of believers. It became apparent to me that my life’s work would be to train and mentor all persons from a grass roots level,” Wilson wrote in an email to The Gazette.
In 25 years, she said, being a female minister was challenging.
“It was often lonely and isolating, but support came from those who saw the value of inclusivity in ministry,” she said.
Wilson enjoys reading, traveling and dancing, and has begun to write her first book.
