Montgomery County police have a suspect in custody who they believe committed a street robbery earlier this morning.

According to Angela Cruz, a police spokeswoman, police received a report of an armed robbery at around 7:30 a.m. in Wheaton.

The robbery took place near Carey Foley streets. The robber, a man, fled into a home on Atherton Drive at around 7:45 a.m., Cruz said.

Police denied access to part of Atherton Drive and warned residents to stay inside, during the arrest.

“There were a lot of police on my back porch,” said Sarah Dow, who lives just a few houses down from the home the robber entered.“Police told us not to go out.”

She said she saw police escorting some women and children past her house, but wasn’t sure if they came out of the home the robber entered.

“There were a lot of men, squad cars, but everything’s safe now,” she said.

A Montgomery County Police Emergency Response Team (SWAT) responded to the scene along with other units. Police arrested one person just before 9 a.m., about an hour after he entered the home, Cruz said.

At 10:15 a.m. police were beginning to clear the scene.

No additional information was immediately available.
