A 63-year-old resident of the Leisure World Community died in a fire in a high-rise residential building Wednesday afternoon.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services responded to the fire at the building in the 15700 block of the Interlachen Drive in Silver Spring at 12:20 p.m.

Debra Yuhas Lee, who lived in the building on the ninth floor, died, said Fire and Rescue Service Assistant Chief Scott Graham.

Montgomery County fire investigators dispatched to the scene have determined that the fire originated in the enclosed balcony/sunroom area of a ninth floor unit, but have not yet determined a cause, Graham said. Fire sprinklers activated in the unit and kept the fire from extending more significantly in the building, he said. Damage estimates were $150,000, Graham said.

Leisure World Manager Kevin Flannery said residents were allowed back in their units by 3 p.m. Wednesday and he estimates that 360 to 380 people live in the 220-unit building. Those residents were not displaced.
