A man has died after his car struck a tree on Laytonsville Road in Damascus on Wednesday morning.

After a preliminary investigation, police believe that Adam Joseph Gaudreau, 48, of Mount Airy, was driving east on Laytonsville Road when his car drifted from the road, hit a large tree and rolled over, according to a police news release. Gaudreau was the only person in the vehicle, a gray 2009 Hyundai Sonata, at the time of the crash.

Emergency responders flew Gaudreau in a Maryland State Police helicopter to R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma in Baltimore where he later died.

The crash happened on Laytonsville Road near Hawkins Creamery Road in the Damascus area. Police temporarily closed a portion of Laytonsville Road between Hawkins Creamery and Damascus roads while the Collision Reconstruction Unit investigated the crash, but the road has since re-opened.

Police do not yet know why the car drifted from the road, the news release said. They are asking anyone with information about the crash to call the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 240-773-6620.
