The man who died in a McLean construction accident Tuesday morning has been identified.

Juan Francisco Cerna Alfaro, 36, of Falls Church, had been working with several others at a home when he fell into a trench and dirt collapsed around him, authorities said.

Police and rescuers were called to the property in the 1000 block of Kinglet Court for a report of a construction accident about 9:30 a.m. They arrived and found Alfaro dead in a trench next to a vacant home.

Alfaro and several other co-workers were digging the trench, which was about 15 feet deep, when Alfaro fell into the trench and dirt collapsed around him, Fairfax County Police reported.

“He was operating a small backhoe when he somehow fell in,” said Dan Schmidt, a Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department spokesman.

The accident is being investigated by police and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
