Three men, including one from Chantilly, have been charged after police say they attempted to rob two Herndon-area McDonald’s restaurants while wearing masks and brandishing firearms.
Police say the three men also may have robbed a 7-Eleven in Sterling.
Town of Herndon police said that at approximately 4:30 a.m. Wednesday, Herndon Police responded for a report of an attempted armed robbery at a McDonald’s restaurant located at 1071 Elden St. Police said an initial investigation revealed that unknown men in a dark-colored vehicle had attempted to rob a drive-thru clerk by threatening her with a gun. The men were unsuccessful and left the scene.
Police said that five minutes before, at approximately 4:40 a.m., another robbery had been reported at another McDonald’s restaurant, located at 330 Elden St. In that incident, three men entered the restaurant and brandished firearms and demanded cash from a clerk. During that robbery, the suspects also took a cellphone from a customer in the store. There were no injuries in either event, police said.
At approximately 4:45 a.m., the same vehicle was observed by officers in the 1000 block of Elden St., and the officers attempted to stop the vehicle, which fled. Officers pursued it into Reston to the 2300 block of Dulles Station Blvd., where the occupants fled from the vehicle into the woods.
“With the assistance of the Fairfax County Police helicopter and K-9 unit, three men were located and taken into custody,” said police spokesman Ron Thunman.
An additional investigation by Herndon police determined that the three men apprehended after the pursuit had been involved in both events.
The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Department also reported that a robbery took place at a 7-Eleven at 21944 Cascades Parkway in Sterling earlier the same morning. The sheriff’s department said the suspects entered the store with guns, assaulted the clerk and then took money from both the cash register and the clerk. The clerk was taken to a local hospital for minor injuries. The county sheriff’s office said it was later determined the car used during the robbery was stolen from Nations Street in South Riding.
“We believe there may be a connection in all three incidents,” Thunman said. “And we are working with both Loudoun County Sheriff’s Department and the Fairfax County Police Department.”
So far, each of the men have been charged in Fairfax County with two counts of armed robbery and one count of attempted armed robbery. Each was also charged with one count of abduction and one count of wearing a mask. All three men also were charged with three counts each of using a firearm in the commission of a felony. Those charged were: Samuel Tyler Johnson, 19, of the 25000 block of Falling Cedars Court in Chantilly; Jonathan Andrew Jones, 19, of the 41000 block of Elstree Terrace in Aldie, and Darius Trenny Foster, 18, of the 25000 block of Gathering Glen Street in Aldie.
The three men were taken to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center, where they are being held without bond. Further charges may be pending in Loudoun County, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Department. No attorney information for any of the three men is listed in Fairfax County court records.
