The University of Northern Virginia has been asked to cease its operations pending an investigation by the state.

On July 16, the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia revoked the University of Northern Virginia’s certificate to operate, according to the council’s website.

SCHEV ordered the university, located at 7601 Little River Turnpike in Annandale, to cease operations immediately.

Calls to the school Tuesday evening were not returned.

The school has failed to be accredited as a college by any entity recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, according to the council. The school has about 500 students.

“SCHEV has written the University of Northern Virginia seeking information regarding student academic and financial records,” the council wrote. “When that information has been obtained, SCHEV will (1) communicate with students regarding the impact of revocation and currently enrolled students’ options for continuing education.”
