Police identified the kayaker who drowned in the Potomac River at Great Falls Thursday as Shannon Christy, 23, of Greenville, South Carolina.

Thursday at about 4:17 p.m., Montgomery County Fire Rescue received a call for a woman drowning in the Potomac River at Great Falls. Following an extensive search by fire and rescue personnel and Christy’s fellow kayakers, her body was recovered from the river about 7:30 p.m., according to a police release.

Police investigation revealed that Christy was attempting to kayak down the falls when she disappeared and was pinned under the water. Christy was pronounced deceased on the scene, police said.

Police rescued a male kayaker from the same area of the Potomac River earlier in the day.
