The man who died in an early morning crash in Gaithersburg on July 4 has been identified.
Shayne Johnson, 24, and Jean Marie Pollard, 28, were thrown from a 2003 Toyota Highlander, which had hit a utility pole, a bus stop, a tree, a fire hydrant, and a pole support cable, according to the statement.
Johnson of Emory Grove Road in Gaithersburg was pronounced dead at the scene; Pollard of Silver Spring was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The accident occurred shortly after 1:30 a.m., when a Montgomery County police officer on N. Summit Avenue spotted an SUV approaching with its high-beam headlights on. According to a police statement detailing the incident, the car did not dim its headlights and the officer made a U-turn to stop the vehicle.
As the officer made the U-turn, the SUV accelerated and turned east onto E. Diamond Avenue, traveling through a red light, according to the statement. The officer lost sight of the vehicle and when the vehicle could not be located, the officer began checking the businesses and driveways along E. Diamond Avenue.
The officer eventually found the car across from 503 E. Diamond Ave. It had left the road and rolled over, according to the statement.
Johnson’s family members could not be reached for comment.
