A raccoon that got in a fight with two dogs in Gaithersburg has tested positive for rabies.
Animal Control officers responded to a call for a dead raccoon June 27 in a resident’s yard in the 200 block of East Deer Park Drive.
“The raccoon had been in an altercation with the resident’s two dogs,” a press release from the City of Gaithersburg said. According to Animal Control Division Chief Lisa Holland, both dogs had up-to-date rabies vaccinations.
The raccoon’s body recently tested positive for the rabies virus, which can be fatal.
Animal Control officials are advising those who have had any contact with a raccoon in the past several weeks to contact the Montgomery County Health Department immediately at 240-777-1755. If your pet has had any contact with a raccoon, contact Gaithersburg Animal Control at 301-258-6343.
