A Rockville 15-year-old drowned in a community pool after closing time Saturday night, Montgomery County Police said.

Hasif Kareem of the 700 block of Monroe Street was swimming with a group of juveniles at the New Mark Commons community pool in the 600 block of Tenger Way in Rockville when he failed to resurface from underwater. The other youths called out to a pedestrian walking by, who dialed 911, police say.

At least 10 officers arrived at the pool around 11 p.m. and began CPR, police spokeswoman Angela Cruz said, Fire and rescue crews transported Kareem to Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Cruz said police do not anticipate any more charges in the case because foul play was not suspected and the county won’t pursue trespassing charges against the youths who fled the scene as officers arrived.

“They were all gone when we arrived,” Cruz said. “They’ve all been identified and we believe they fled because they all panicked.”

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Major Crimes Division at 240-773-5070.
