Frederick County sheriff’s deputies are investigating reports of vehicles racing in Gambrill State Park in Frederick after a 20-year-old Gaithersburg man died in an early Sunday car crash, according to the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office.

Daniel Ledaye Swader was killed when his vehicle hit a tree while trying to go along a curve at 1:30 a.m. in the 8800 block of Gambrill Park Road, according to a sheriff’s office news release.

Swader was driving a 1993 Honda Accord south on the road when the car’s passenger-side tires went off the road. The car passed into the northbound lane after Swader over-corrected, causing the vehicle to rotate, the sheriff’s office said. The car continued off the roadway, striking a tree.

Swader was pronounced dead at the scene, the sheriff’s office said. His body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore, where an autopsy determined that the manner of death was an accident and the cause was blunt force trauma.

Trevor Edgar Robinson, 20, of North Potomac, a passenger, was uninjured and refused medical treatment at the scene, the sheriff’s office said.

A deputy was in the area, investigating reports of vehicles racing on the road, when the office received reports of the crash, the sheriff’s office said.

Investigating deputies are still working “to determine if the driver was speeding or part of any racing,” said Sgt. Jennifer Bailey, spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office, in an email Tuesday.

The office recently received two reports of speeding or racing in the Gambrill State Park area, she said.

The sheriff’s office has “historically” received isolated speeding complaints along Gambrill Park Road, “just as we have received speeding complaints on other roads in the county,” Bailey said.

Swader was a general studies major at Montgomery College since 2011. He was enrolled this semester in classes at the college’s Germantown and Rockville campuses, according to Elizabeth Homan, director of communications at the school.

“Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Daniel Swader,” she said in an email. “Upon learning of Daniel’s death, our counselors reached out to his professors and will visit those classes, and they will provide grief counseling to any students who need assistance.”

Anyone with information about the collision is asked to call Deputy 1st Class Nathan Rector at 301-600-6490.
