Prince George’s County Police are investigating the death of a man who they say was apparently killed with his own weapon while trying to commit a robbery.

Cordell Antonio Brown, 26, of the 1100 block of Stevens Road in southeast Washington, D.C., was found dead Sunday in Capitol Heights after he was allegedly killed with his own handgun during a botched robbery attempt, police said.

County police were called to the 4400 block of 23rd Parkway in Hillcrest Heights about 12:35 a.m. after receiving a report of a shooting and found Brown suffering from gunshot wounds and pronounced him dead on the scene, police said in a statement.

An initial investigation found that two people were sitting in a car in the area when Brown allegedly approached the vehicle in an attempt to rob them, but after a struggle over the handgun, Brown was shot, police said in a release.

The vehicle’s occupants are cooperating with police, and no criminal charges are being placed at this time, police said.
