A 38-year-old woman and an 18-month-old child were taken to the hospital Thursday after the woman’s van flipped over after crashing into a tractor-trailer on Interstate 270.

The driver of the van, Joana Bartolata of Montgomery Village, was traveling north on I-270 near Democracy Boulevard around 4 p.m. when she attempted to change lanes and crashed into the tractor-trailer, said Sgt. Vinson Smith of the Maryland State Police.

When the van flipped, the child was restrained in a car seat, said Asst. Chief Scott Graham of Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services.

Bartolata and the child were taken to Suburban Hospital, both with non-life-threatening injuries, Graham said.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured, Smith said.

All northbound lanes of I-270 except the shoulder were shut down Thursday during the evening’s rush hour.

At about 4:30 p.m., traffic was backed up 8.5 miles, according to Alert Montgomery.
