Maryland State Police closed Md. 26 in the Mount Pleasant area for about five hours Monday evening after troopers responding to a report of a possibly suicidal man inside a home heard a gunshot when they arrived, police said.

The 46-year-old man was later found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to state police spokesman Greg Shipley.

The state police Frederick barrack received a call about 4:21 p.m. Monday to check on a possibly suicidal man at the home at 9523 Liberty Road, also known as Md. 26, Shipley said.

Troopers and Frederick County Sheriff’s Office deputies had arrived on the scene, and, while attempting to make contact with the man, heard a gunshot inside the home, he said.

Police then set up a perimeter, closed off the road and evacuated nearby homes as a precaution.

Special tactical teams from the state police and sheriff’s office later entered the home and found the man already deceased, Shipley said.
