Prince George’s County police are investigating the death of a Washington, D.C., man whose body was found Sunday in a wooded area in Bladensburg.

The deceased man has been identified as 37-year-old Michael Lydell Benning of Washington, D.C., who had been reported missing April 20, said Bladensburg Police Chief Charles Owens.

Owens said Benning’s wife reported him missing, and police discovered his abandoned vehicle around 2 a.m. Sunday before finding his body nearby around 4:30 p.m. that day on 57th Avenue.

Benning’s body was found by a Bladensburg officer who had gone back to investigate the abandoned vehicle, police said. Police said Benning appeared to have one gunshot wound, and classified the death as a homicide.

Owens said the official cause of death is still being determined pending an autopsy from the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office.
