Tanger Factory Outlet Centers and Peterson Cos. announced plans Tuesday to develop an upscale retail outlet center in Clarksburg.
The property is at the interchange of I-270 and Stringtown Road, on the Miles-Coppula property.
The entire property is about 100 acres. The outlet is expected to be situated on about 40 of those acres, according to Taylor Chess, senior vice president of retail for Peterson Cos. of Fairfax, Va.
Peterson Cos. bought the property in February 2012 and created a joint partnership with Tanger Factory Outlets Center.
Access to the property is via Stringtown Road and Clarksburg Road off Md. 355.
The property is undergoing the county’s master plan review process, with a scheduled environmental discussion before the Montgomery County Planning Commission on Wednesday.
Chess said while construction of the outlet center is dependent on the county’s planning approval process, work on the center could start as early as the fall of 2014.
Councilman Craig Rice (D-Dist. 2) of Germantown said the outlet center would complete a “great synergy” with the Clarksburg Town Center.
“At this point it is imperative to start laying the groundwork. We want to deliver on something to the Clarksburg residents,” Rice said. “They have been waiting a long time to bring true retail and the benefits to Clarksburg.”
The closest Tanger outlets to the Clarksburg site are in Ocean City and Rehoboth Beach, Del. The Greensboro, N.C., company started building outlets near National Harbor in Prince George’s County late last year, also in partnership with Peterson Cos.
