The man who was at the wheel in an accident that claimed the life of a Silver Spring man on Feb. 1 was arrested just days later for drunken driving.
Brandon Drake Goodman, 21, of Brookeville, has been charged with seven citations in a drunken driving incident that took place at 10:17 p.m. Feb. 12 around Spencerville Road and Veitch Lane, online court records show.
He has a traffic case trial set for Aug. 9 in Silver Spring, according to the records.
On Feb. 1, Goodman was at the wheel of a black 2005 Ford Focus that went off Batchellors Forest Road. In the car along with him was Earl Dong-Min Lee, 19, of Silver Spring, and David Lankford Hampp, 21, of Olney, the son of the car’s owner.
Lee, who was sitting in the back seat, was ejected from the car after it went off the road, and hit an embankment and a tree before stopping, according to an initial police accident report.
Lee was pronounced dead at the scene. Goodman has not been charged in the crash that claimed Lee’s life. An investigation into that crash is expected to wrap up in the next week or two, police said.
Goodman suffered an ankle injury, a concussion and contusions, while Hampp was injured in the ribs and back in the crash, The Gazette was told at the time.
Susan Lee, Earl’s sister, said that she had been unaware of the Feb. 12 drunken driving citation.
“That actually makes me really angry,” she told The Gazette after learning about the arrest. “It’s not enough that he killed one of his best friends; he still hasn’t learned his lesson?”
Lee said the trio had left a sports bar before the crash that claimed her brother’s life, and that she believed Hampp had asked Goodman to drive after they left the bar.
Hampp’s family did not return repeated calls for comment. Multiple calls to a number listed to Goodman also were not answered or returned.
On Monday, Leonard Stamm, who is representing Goodman in the Feb. 12 incident, said he had not yet seen the police reports surrounding the incidents.
“We’re going to be thoroughly investigating it on our end,” he said.
