A 49-year-old man was killed early Sunday after allegedly driving recklessly and striking a tree along Route 108 near Hawkins Creamery Road in Gaithersburg.

Jose Antonio Ayala, of Fullview Court in Gaithersburg, died at the scene, Montgomery County police said.

According to Montgomery County police, around 1:02 a.m. Sunday, an off-duty police department employee reported seeing a gray pick-up truck being driven erratically. An officer responded to the area to locate the vehicle but before the officer could get Ayala to stop, Ayala veered off the eastbound lane of Route 108 and struck a tree.

According to police, family members told authorities that he was a diabetic and dependent on insulin. He was last seen by family members around 6 p.m. Saturday when he left his home to pick up groceries, police said.

The exact cause of the crash is still under investigation and Montgomery police are asking anyone with information to contact the department’s Collision Reconstruction Unit at 240-773-6620.
