Gaithersburg’s planning commission signed off on a Crown community facility and new car dealership at a meeting Wednesday night.
Construction of residential units in the Crown community, located at the intersection of Sam Eig Highway and Fields Road in Gaithersburg, is “moving along as we speak,” said Rob Robinson, lead of long-range planning for the city.
Developer Sunbrook Partners filed an application with the city to build a facility to house its homeowners association and community programs. The two-story building will include a pool.
The planning commission voted to recommend the facility’s schematic development plan be approved by the mayor and council.
The commission also voted in favor of CarMax Auto Superstores, Inc., which plans to build a new Gaithersburg facility with sales offices and an outdoor showroom at 16331 Shady Grove Road. The company plans to relocate its store on North Frederick Road to the new 13.66-acre space.
The site, currently occupied by a closed Great Indoors retail store, is part of about 28 acres of land that were annexed into the City of Gaithersburg last year after a brief dispute between the city and Rockville’s leaders.
CarMax plans to build on only a 10.66-acre portion of that land, according to Community Planning Director Trudy Schwarz.
The planning commission voted to recommend the plan to the mayor and city council for review and approval.
