Police have identified the 1-year-old boy who was killed after a pickup truck struck him and his father while they were walking along a sidewalk on St. Barnabas Road in Temple Hills Thursday.
Sherrik Farmer, of the 1500 block of Southview Drive in Oxon Hill, was being pushed in a stroller by his father when the two were struck. His father, who has not been identified, has been hospitalized. No update on his condition was available Saturday morning, according to Cpl. Clinton Copeland, a county police spokesman.
About 5:09 p.m. in the 5100 block of St. Barnabas Road near S. Barnaby Road, police responded to a 911 call for pedestrians struck.
The driver of a blue pickup truck was traveling west on St. Barnabas Road when he, for unknown reasons, drove onto the sidewalk and struck the pedestrians who were walking in the same direction, said Cpl. Maria McKinney, a county police spokeswoman.
The father, in his 20s, sustained non-life-threatening injuries to his legs. The mother was not struck but was also taken to a hospital for an evaluation after being emotionally unstable, said McKinney.
Police have not released the identities of the pedestrians or the driver.
McKinney said the driver remained on scene and is cooperating with the investigation, but officers still are determining why the driver lost control of his vehicle and drove onto the sidewalk.
“The accident reconstruction team will determine that,” she said. “It’s all under investigation whether any charges will be filed.”
It remains unclear if speed or alcohol were factors in the crash, police said.
The 5100 block of St. Barnabas Road was shut down in both directions immediately following the incident but reopened as of 7:10 p.m. Thursday.
