Prince George’s police have made an arrest in the gang-related shooting that killed a Lanham 20-year-old outside a College Park hotel.
On Monday, police arrested 20-year-old Edwin Morales of the 300 block of Monterey Lane in Southeast Washington, D.C., for the Feb. 24 homicide.
He is charged with first- and second-degree murder in the killing of David Esequel Avelar, 20, of the 6600 block of 94th Avenue in Lanham, according to county police.
Avelar died shortly after being shot multiple times around 4 a.m. in the 9100 block of U.S. Route 1, according to police, who responded to the scene for the report of a shooting.
Police said the shooting was gang-related and stemmed from a separate parties being held at the same hotel in the area.
Members of the rival gangs were involved in a dispute outside the hotel in a parking lot when the shots rang out, striking Avelar, police said.
Marc Limansky, a spokesman for University of Maryland police, said a crime alert was sent out to the university community around 4:20 a.m. since the incident was close to campus. No students or faculty were involved, he said, but they sought to err on the side of caution in case the shooter was traveling toward the campus.
Morales is currently in custody in D.C. and is awaiting extradition to Prince George’s County.
Defense attorney information for Morales was not listed with the county courts by Monday, according to online court records.
A phone number for Morales’ or Avelar’s residences could not be located.
