Claire Moy, 12, a seventh-grader at Westland Middle School in Bethesda, placed second in the short story for Grade 7 category of the State of Maryland International Reading Association Council’s Young Authors Contest.
Her story, “42 Years,” is about a middle-aged man who reflects on the drowning death of his little sister 42 years earlier, an event that has haunted him his whole life.
That summer afternoon, Paul Fisher had reluctantly agreed to let his 3-year-old sister tag along with him to the lake, but she annoyed him with her efforts to find rocks for him to skip across the water. When he left her alone to find their parents, she drowned trying to retrieve the perfect rock for him.
The story will be included in a 2013 Young Authors Anthology.
Claire wrote the story as an English class assignment at Westland under teacher Sarah Kass.
