The math department at Hood College in Frederick will hold a special mathematics day for local high school girls.
The half-day event is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 11, at Hood College, 401 Rosemont Ave., in Frederick.
The Sonia Kovalevsky Math Day, named in honor of the first woman to receive a doctorate in mathematics, is intended to encourage young women to continue their study of mathematics in college.
Students and teachers from each high school in Frederick County are invited to participate. The day will include workshops that challenge a student’s problem-solving skills, a panel discussion by women who use math in their careers, and lunch with Hood students, faculty and administrators.
Members of Hood’s student chapter of the Association for Women in Mathematics and other volunteer students will assist in the workshops.
