A music teacher at New Hampshire Estates Elementary School in Silver Spring is in jail today on a charge of possession of child pornography.
Lawrence Joynes, 54, of Dundalk was arrested by Baltimore County Police Thursday on one charge of possession of child pornography. He is being held in the Baltimore County Detention Center in lieu of posting $1 million bail.
Marinda Thomas Evans, principal of New Hampshire Estates Elementary School, said Friday parents were alerted about the arrest via the school’s ConnectEd phone message system on Thursday night. She said an additional letter is expected to go home with students recapping the incident.
“We have no reason to believe that” any Montgomery County students were involved in the pornography images, she told The Gazette Friday.
Evans said she has been told by police that the images were found on his home computer.
The school system has already hired a long-term substitute teacher to take over Joynes’ music classes, according to Evans.
Montgomery County Schools spokesman Dana Tofig said Joynes has been placed on administrative leave. Tofig said Joynes has been a teacher at New Hampshire Estates Elementary School for ten years, and an MCPS employee for a total of 27 years.
“We are trying to be as honest and transparent with what we know,” Evans said. “We are going on with the educational programs in a safe environment for our children.”
Montgomery County Police have been notified and will be conducting an investigation to determine if any criminal offenses occurred in Montgomery County, according to Julia M. Hardgrove, office coordinator for the Baltimore County Police & Fire departments’ Office of Media and Communications.
