The following Bowie children were recognized as winners of the city’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. contest. The contest had students celebrate the civil rights leader in age appropriate ways. Children in kindergarten to second grade were tasked with coloring a picture of King. Students in third to fifth grades were tasked with creating a poster that represented the theme of “Moving Forward with Dr. King’s Dream” and writing a short summary explaining it. Children in grades sixth through 12th grade were asked to create a short video of up to 90 seconds that depicted the contest theme and include a written description of their video. The winners got a celebratory ribbon, checks ranging from $25 to $100 and a chance to meet the Bowie City Council during its final planned council session of the month Feb. 19.

The winners were: Haider Syed, Jocelyn Gross, Samantha Burgess, Ankita Gola, Karen Gomez-Cordon, Jada Avery, Henry Jackson, Kareem Adebisi, Sarah Kuhnert and Sixtus Akinlosotu.
