A 3-year-old boy is dead after being struck by his family’s own vehicle after a Wednesday evening incident, said Prince George’s County Police.

Police arrived in the 600 block of Audrey Lane in Oxon Hill at around 7:30 p.m. where they found Dominic Watkins, 3, and his younger sister, according to a police statement.

The children’s father and grandmother arrived at the apartment complex to pick up his girl, said Cpl. Maria McKinney, a police spokeswoman.

The boy ran to the car to greet his grandmother while the father picked up his 2-year-old daughter, but the vehicle was not in park and began to drift backward, according to police.

“[The daughter] was dropped as the father had that moment of shock while trying to get a hold of the vehicle,” McKinney said.

While the father jumped into the driver seat to stop the vehicle, Dominic Watkins fell and was run over, police said.

Both children were rushed to area hospitals where Dominic Watkins was pronounced dead, McKinney said. The girl sustained non-life threatening injuries and was hospitalized at an area hospital.

It does not appear that foul play or alcohol played a factor, according to police.

Police are investigating the incident and could not provide details on the type of vehicle involved.

“It’s all under investigation,” McKinney said. “We’re not going to jump to conclusions.”
