Eleanor Roosevelt High School boys basketball coach Brendan O’Connell said his players were looking to exact a little revenge against host Bowie Tuesday night after the Bulldogs handed the Raiders their only loss of the season on Jan. 18. O’Connell just hoped to see his team play well on the road.
As it turned out, both got what they wanted and then some through a commanding 68-42 victory to further cement their insurmountable stranglehold on the County 4A League with one regular season game remaining.
“I know the players were concerned with [avenging the earlier setback]; I wasn’t too concerned with that. I was just hoping we’d play well and we played well,” O’Connell said. “We defended really well. I thought we made them work for everything.”
Roosevelt improved to 20-1 overall and 16-1 in the 4A League; Bowie slipped to 11-8, 8-8 in the league.
“We won the 4A League no matter what happens Friday,” O’Connell said. “We’ve been a pretty good team the last few years, but we’ve never done that. We’ve never played in [the county championship] game so I think it would be a pretty cool game to play in. The championship’s on the line. That’s always exciting.”
The Raiders jumped out to a 14-6 lead after one quarter of play and never looked back, opening up leads of 32-15 at the half and 52-26 through three quarters of play. Tiwian Kendley paced the Roosevelt with 14 points followed by 11 points each from Jesse Ason and Trevor Evans.
Bowie received eight points each from Michael Giles, Jalen Robinson and Juan Johnson Jr.
