Prince George’s County police are investigating a fatal shooting involving a deputy sheriff from Alexandria, Va., that allegedly stemmed from a breaking and entering in Fort Washington on Tuesday night.

Around 10:49 p.m., police responded to the 8400 block of Rose Marie Drive for the report of a shooting, police said. Once there, police found a man dead outside the residence, police said.

Police said an investigation revealed that the homeowner, a deputy sheriff for the Alexandria Sheriff’s Office, came home and discovered a burglary in progress. He then fatally shot one suspect, police said.

Police said the homeowner was made aware of the burglary in progress when he discovered his front door was damaged.

According to county police, the investigation revealed that there may also have been more suspects on the scene who left before being confronted by the homeowner or responding county officers.

The investigation is ongoing, police said.
